What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
