Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further activity:
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
