People have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative involved in the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The official said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance provision
  • Post-war administration of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages come back no one will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the evening falls, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"We are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, particularly my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area indicated two more victims had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers said.
