The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
