The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
