The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm this decision promptly following his victory in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain within me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
