The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
