Hardline Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

In a decisive runoff election, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.

After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast does not command an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are counted together.

This political landscape may complicate his policy goals, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not offered a clear explanation.

"We have several aspects about what a Kast government will look like that we don't know because he has not detailed his methods for implement them," commented a political professor.

The expert added, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right. However the area with much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
