Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in armed forces or security positions.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to safeguard and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute orders that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
The video message reportedly provoke a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified announcement denouncing the statements.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our nation with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and retract his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and made an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the national charter and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must unite and censure the ex-president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature advising troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically encouraging."
