Cruise Halted After Fatal Incident of Woman Stranded on Remote Island

One 60-day voyage around the Australian Coast was terminated days after the fatal incident of an senior woman who was stranded by the vessel on a distant island.

The passenger had been trekking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned later that day after the ship staff realised the woman was unaccounted for.

A large-scale search operation located her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the incident, in coordination with investigators and the official investigator.

The offspring of the victim said that her family was "shocked and distressed that the vessel left the island after an organised tour without my parent".

In her statement, she described her mum as an "energetic octogenarian" who was a participant of a walking organization.

"Based on limited details we have been told, it appears that there was a breakdown of attention and common sense," she said.

She further stated that she hoped the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have undertaken that might have protected Mum's life".

"Based on information from the police that it was a extremely warm day, and she fell ill on the hill climb," she stated.

"They requested her to go back, alone. Then the vessel sailed away, apparently without performing a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or not long after, mother died, alone."

Organization Reaction

In a statement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "working closely with authorities to support their inquiry".

He said that the company was "very regretful that this has happened" and had offered its total backing to the family.

The liner serves up to one hundred twenty guests with nearly fifty staff, according to company information. It was specially constructed to enter isolated locations of the Australian coast and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to take travelers on day excursions.
