A China's judicial body has sentenced several leading figures of a notorious Burmese organized crime group to death as Chinese authorities persists in its efforts on scam operations in the region.

In all, twenty-one Bai family figures and partners were convicted of fraud, murder, assault and other crimes, reported a official report released on the court website.

The family is among a handful of organized crime groups that gained influence in the 2000s and transformed the underdeveloped isolated region of Laukkaing into a lucrative center of casinos and entertainment zones.

Recently they shifted to scams in which thousands of trafficked workers, a large number of them from China, are trapped, mistreated and compelled to scam targets in criminal enterprises estimated at huge sums.

Details of the Judgment

Mafia head Bai Suocheng and his heir the younger Bai were among the several men given to death by the judicial body. Another individual, Hu Xiaojiang and Chen Guangyi were the other three sentenced.

Two members of the clan syndicate were given suspended death sentences. Several were given to life in prison, while nine others were given prison terms varying from a period of 3-20 years.

This family, who led their own militia, set up forty-one bases to accommodate their online fraud activities and casinos, government said.

Extent of Illegal Operations

These illegal enterprises involved exceeding 29bn local currency ($4.1 billion; £3.1bn). These activities also caused the deaths of several Chinese individuals, the self-inflicted death of one and several harm, reports stated.

The severe punishments handed down by the court are within the Chinese effort to remove the large fraud operations in Southeast Asia - and issue a firm message to additional criminal organizations.

Background of the Families

These groups rose to power in the recent decades with the support of Min Aung Hlaing - who now leads Myanmar's military government. The leader had aimed to bolster partners in Laukkaing after removing its earlier ruler.

Within the families, the this family were "the top", Bai Yingcang previously stated to official sources.

"At that time, we was the dominant in each of the political and military arenas," he remarked in a documentary about the Bai family, aired on national media in July.

Within that documentary, a employee at a fraud facilities recalled the mistreatment he had endured there: in addition to being assaulted, he had his nails removed with instruments and two of his fingers amputated with a blade.

Additional Accusations

Bai Yingcang is among those who were given to execution this week. He has additionally been separately sentenced of planning to trade and manufacture 11 tonnes of illegal drugs, state media announced.

Decline of the Families

The families' downfall occurred in last year as situations shifted.

For years Beijing has encouraged the Myanmar junta to control fraudulent schemes in the area.

Recently, the authorities issued legal actions for the key figures of these families.

Bai Suocheng, the Bai family's patriarch, was among the warlords who were handed to China from Myanmar in early 2024.

"Why is the Chinese government making significant resources to pursue the clans?" a expert commented in the summer report.
"It's to warn individuals, regardless of who you are, where you are, if you commit such heinous acts affecting the nationals, you will pay the price."
