Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior political figure stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
