Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
