Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Gear to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Western Troops, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure sensitive technology permitting the Taliban to identify local individuals who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk

The source, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining official response of a massive breach of personal details involving approximately 19k individuals who had requested to come to the UK to escape the regime.

How the Leak Occurred

An electronic document including their personal data, such as identities, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at special operations center in last year.

The incident came to light in late 2023, when identities of nine people who had applied to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that militant forces lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain mobile details, they are able to track your exact position. That is what specialized teams accomplished.”

During testimony about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research submitted to the committee indicated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A gag order regarding the leak was implemented in last year and blocked any information about it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization she was working with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate if they could and switched their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, should militant forces acquired such data, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The source argued that government assessment conducted by a retired civil servant had been wrong to conclude that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not confronting the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible abuse endured by at-risk Afghans, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure households to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
